Western Kentucky University (WKU) invites applicants for the position of Academic Director of the newly-created Chinese Flagship Language Institute, a federally-funded intensive program designed to create superior speakers of Chinese and to serve as a regional resource for Chinese language teaching.

The University of Sydney Confucius Institute is the first Confucius Institute established in New South Wales. The role of the University of Sydney Confucius Institute is to promote Chinese language and culture and programs of the highest academic standards to the greater Sydney community. The successful applicant will be offered a part-time (50%) fixed term position for 3 years at Professor or Associate Professor Level with an appropriate half time faculty appointment to be negotiated.

Middlebury Collegeseeks an energetic and innovative person to serve as Academic Director of Middlebury’s C.V. Starr-Middlebury School in China (Kunming), which will be located at Yunnan University (YU) and operated jointly by Middlebury College and CET Academic Programs. The School in China opened in 2004-2005 in Hangzhou. Complementing the existing program in Hangzhou, sites in Kunming and Beijing will open in 2009-2010.
The Academic Director will play a central role in launching the new site in China and will hire, train, and supervise program teachers. The Academic Director will work collaboratively with the Middlebury College Department of Chinese to design, implement, and monitor the academic curriculum and, with the Resident Director (employed by CET) and the staff of the YU Foreign Affairs Office, to manage the overall program.

Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Chinese language, linguistics, literature, or culture (or a related field), native or near-native language competency in both Chinese and English. Administrative and study abroad experience strongly preferred. Computer literacy essential. Candidates with relevant teaching experience, knowledge of language pedagogy, and a demonstrated interest in second-language acquisition in the U.S. and China, as well as strong interpersonal skills and leadership ability, will receive the strongest consideration. The successful candidate will spend the academic year in residence in Kunming, where s/he will be responsible for overseeing the instructional program with approximately 30 students initially, in one- and two-semester programs, and will spend up to three weeks each summer in Middlebury, Vermont (while the Language Schools are in session), conducting student interviews and orientations and meeting with faculty and staff.
